Statement of Condolence on the Passing of Former Premier of the State Council, Mr. Zhu Rongji
12 August 2026
The Association was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Zhu Rongji, former Premier of the State Council, on 12 August 2026. All our members express profound regret and extend our heartfelt condolences.
During his tenure, Mr. Zhu Rongji actively promoted financial system reforms in the mainland, including regulating the functions of the People's Bank of China, deepening reforms in commercial banking and the foreign exchange system, and continuously improving the regulatory framework for the securities and futures markets. These efforts laid important foundations for the long‑term development of the financial markets in both the mainland and Hong Kong.
Shortly after Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the Asian financial crisis struck, and international speculative activities impacted our financial system. At that critical juncture, Mr. Zhu Rongji unequivocally expressed his support for the SAR Government's efforts to maintain market stability. His stance was pivotal in consolidating Hong Kong's status as an international financial centre and in bolstering market confidence. Our members recall this with vivid memory and deep gratitude.
The passing of Mr. Zhu Rongji is a loss to our nation and to the financial community. The Association will uphold its professional spirit, continue to unite the industry, safeguard the rights and interests of practitioners, and remain committed to promoting the steady and healthy development of the sector, so as to carry forward his enduring concern for the sound functioning of financial markets.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Zhu Rongji.
